CLIFFORD LEE JOHNSON III was the Director of Musical Development at Manhattan Theatre Club for 16 years. Musicals produced during his tenure include The Wild Party by Andrew Lippa; A Class Act by Edward Kleban, Linda Kline, and Lonny Price; and LoveMusik by Kurt Weill and Alfred Uhry, directed by Harold Prince. Johnson is now a theater critic for Back Stage. His play, Reconstruction, was produced in the New York International Fringe Festival in 2004 and by the Open Book in 2005, and his article, "The Persona Musical," recently appeared in The Dramatist. In addition, he served as a creative consultant during the creation of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, he graduated from Ole Miss and currently lives with two writers, his wife Jane Alice Kelley and their daughter playwright Sofia Johnson.
