Stephen Bray
STEPHEN BRAY is a member of the composer and lyricist team on the upcoming Boradway musical The Color Purple. He is an accomplished composer, producer and percussionist, will be making his theatrical debut with The Color Purple. He began his music studies with private instruction at age 14, and continued his training at Washtenaw College in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After moving to New York in 1980, Bray developed, co-wrote, and performed music with Madonna that would result in her Warner Brothers recording contract. He went on to write and/or produce many of her top ten recordings, including Angel, Into the Groove, Papa Don't Preach, True Blue, and Express Yourself. During this time he also wrote and produced music for his own band, Breakfast Club, which earned a Grammy nomination in 1987 for Best New Artist, and a top ten single, Right On Track. Bray then relocated to Los Angeles and continued work with Madonna and Breakfast Club. In addition, he began composing and producing songs for various multi-platinum artists including The Jets, Gladys Knight, and Kylie Minogue. Film and television projects have included Beverly Hills Cop II, Shelley Duvall's Mother Goose: Rock and Rhyme, Who's That Girl?, All About the Benjamins, and themes for PBS's California Connected and Oxygen's Fat Girl. Stephen is currently developing new artists and material for his Soultone label.
